Skin Prick Test (SPT) for Allergies: What to Expect, Uses & Preparation
Understand how Skin Prick Testing (SPT) works to identify airborne dust mite, pollen, mold, and food allergens for allergic asthma and rhinitis in Jaipur.
What is a Skin Prick Test (SPT)?
Skin Prick Testing (SPT) is the international gold-standard diagnostic tool used by pulmonologists and allergists to detect immediate IgE-mediated allergic reactions.
It identifies specific environmental allergens (such as dust mites, grass pollens, fungal spores, pet dander) and dietary triggers causing allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, eczema, and chronic hives.
How the Test is Performed
Tiny allergen extract droplets are placed on the forearm skin. A small lancet gently pricks the top layer of skin. It is virtually painless with no bleeding.
If you are sensitive, a small raised bump (wheal) appears within 15–20 minutes, allowing Dr. Akhil Bansal to map your exact allergic sensitivities.
Benefits and Immunotherapy Planning
Knowing your exact triggers allows precise allergen avoidance and targeted inhaler or immunotherapy management, reducing frequent asthma flares.
