Pulmonary Function Test (PFT): How Spirometry Measures Lung Health

August 15, 20267 min readBy Dr. Akhil Bansal

A detailed guide to PFT spirometry testing, FEV1/FVC ratios, and diagnosing asthma vs COPD by Pulmonologist Dr. Akhil Bansal.

What is Spirometry?

Spirometry is the most common Pulmonary Function Test (PFT). It measures how much air you can inhale and how fast you can forcefully exhale it.

It measures metrics like FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) and FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second) to detect airflow obstruction.

When Should You Get a PFT Done?

If you suffer from chronic cough, wheezing, breathlessness during exercise, or have a history of heavy smoking or industrial dust exposure.

Educational information only. It does not replace an examination or a named treatment plan at the clinic.
